A man with a long criminal history involving child sexual violence was executed in broad daylight in Brazil, less than 24 hours after being released from prison, in a case that has reignited debate over justice, public safety, and vigilantism.
The victim, João Ferreira da Silva, had been convicted in connection with the 2005 disappearance and murder of nine-year-old Bruno Aparecido dos Santos in Sinop. At the time, da Silva confessed to raping and killing the child and later received a 42-year prison sentence. Court records also show he had a separate conviction for sexually assaulting another child, compounding public outrage surrounding the case.
In December 2025, after serving roughly two decades behind bars, a court approved da Silva’s release under Brazil’s semi-open prison regime, which allows inmates to leave custody under monitored conditions. Less than a day after his release from Ferrugem Penitentiary, he was gunned down outside a guesthouse in what authorities described as a targeted execution.
Security camera footage shows two masked men approaching da Silva, forcing him against a wall, and shooting him at close range before fleeing the scene. He died on the street before emergency services could arrive. Police confirmed that no suspects have been arrested so far, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The killing revived memories of the intense public anger that followed da Silva’s arrest in 2005, when an estimated 500 residents attempted to lynch him outside a police station. Officers were forced to fire warning shots to disperse the crowd, highlighting the depth of community outrage even at that time.
Authorities have condemned the killing and reiterated that acts of vigilante justice undermine the rule of law, regardless of the crimes involved. The case has once again exposed tensions in Brazil’s criminal justice system, particularly surrounding early release policies for violent offenders and the lasting trauma such crimes leave on communities.
