In the heart of the New York City Financial District, a small bodega has found an unlikely hero—Layla, a calico cat whose mousing skills have turned her into a local legend. After the store sat closed for four years, its basement became heavily overrun with mice. Traditional methods weren’t enough, so the owner turned to a solution New Yorkers swear by: a bodega cat.
Layla didn’t disappoint. According to the photographer who has been documenting NYC’s famous bodega cats for years, she is one of the most skilled mousers he has ever encountered. Within just three days, Layla eliminated the entire mouse problem. Since then, not a single mouse has been spotted in the shop.
The owner was so impressed—and so grateful—that when a contractor asked what color tiles he wanted for the remodel, he simply pointed to Layla. The result? A floor design inspired by the cat herself, turning her into both the store’s protector and its design inspiration.
Bodega cats have long been part of NYC culture, loved for their charm, personality, and natural pest-control abilities. But Layla has raised the bar, proving that sometimes the best solutions come with whiskers, attitude, and unmatched instinct.
Her story continues to spread across social media, celebrating not just her hunting talent but also the special bond shared between New Yorkers and their iconic bodega cats.
