A kindergarten teacher in New London is facing criminal charges after authorities allege she used cocaine inside a classroom bathroom while students were nearby, prompting concern among parents and school officials.

According to police, 58-year-old Laurie Laubenstein, who worked at Lincoln Elementary School, became the subject of an internal review after colleagues reportedly noticed changes in her behavior. Staff members are said to have discovered a white powdery substance and bloody tissues in the classroom bathroom, raising suspicions that led to further investigation.

An anonymous tip reportedly alerted a school resource officer, who initiated inquiries into the matter. Authorities collected samples from the bathroom area, and subsequent testing confirmed the substance was cocaine, investigators said.

Police allege that additional quantities of cocaine were later found in Laubenstein’s purse and coat pocket. According to law enforcement officials, she admitted to using cocaine before arriving at school and again inside the school building. Investigators say she told authorities that she “always cleans up after herself” and maintained that she would never intentionally place students in harm’s way.

Laubenstein now faces charges related to possession of cocaine. Officials noted that the charges carry an enhancement because the alleged offense occurred in close proximity to a school. Court proceedings are expected to determine the next steps in the case.

The school district confirmed that the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the legal process. In communication with parents, district officials stated that there is no indication students were directly exposed to danger during the alleged incidents.

The allegations have sparked strong reactions within the community, with many parents expressing shock that drugs were allegedly used on school grounds, particularly in a kindergarten setting. School officials have emphasized their commitment to student safety and said they are cooperating fully with law enforcement.

As the case moves through the legal system, authorities continue to review the evidence and circumstances surrounding the investigation. The incident has renewed discussions about staff screening, oversight, and ensuring safe learning environments for young students.
